Futons and Sofa Beds Direct from our Workshop
Unlike many internet retailers, we really do supply futon sofa beds direct to you, the customer. We manufacture most of the models we supply in our own workshops and all our self-manufactured models are our own unique futons offering something different and hopefully better than the many copy-cat products to be found elsewhere.
For example - our CLASSIC Futon offers multi-height seat positions, our TRADITIONAL Futon give a normal bed height and simple
conversion operation. The SLOUCH COUCH Sofa Bed is designed in an easy to assemble modular form so it will go through the smallest of doorways and round the most awkward
stairs or loft-access.
Alternatively our ZIPIT, ZIPZAP and the patented KEWB offer our innovative design alternatives for flexible furniture sleeping solutions, while at the same time being funky. Futons from Sit and Sleep really stand out in the futon world by offering something different, effective and distinctive.
Timber from
Sustainable Sources-
Forestry Stewardship Council
All the timber we use for production in our futon company is sourced from Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) approved saw mills. The FSC is an independent non-profit organisation, established to help ensure timber is grown in socially and environmentally responsible forestry. This helps to counteract the terrible effects of such environmentally damaging practices as illegal logging, mass deforestation and environmental exploitation.
After careful machining to provide a smooth finish, the timber is cut into componenets and prepared for assembly. At this stage each and every component is scrutinised for faults. Rejected parts are, if possible, cut down to make smaller parts, cutting away the fault but maximising timber efficiency.
To further enhance our careful management of resources, all our futon bases are wrapped in card board made from 100% recycled paper and card. |

Futons
and Sofa Bed Fillings
Over the years, futon fillings have changed and developed. Originally, the Japanese futon were a light-weight thin mattress filled with pure cotton that could be rolled-up and stored on end during the day. This helped with airing the mattress and kept the filling well plumped, but most importantly saved space in the compact living accommodation of typical Japanese housing.
Modern, mostly 'western' futons soon evolved into much thicker, heavier things. Western tastes didn'tt take well to one or two inch thick sleeping surfaces and so extra fillings were soon added. Often this meant simply adding more layers of cotton but this proved to be very expensive. For many years now a lot of futon mattresses have been filled with a mixture of cotton layers and woolen felt. Woolen felt is less expensive than cotton and has a good bounce resilience but futons made in this way are very heavy.
Increased weight is why western-style futons are generally used on a slatted wooden base as this airs the futon mattress without the need for daily rolling up. Futons, as with all bed mattresses, should be turned regularly and plumped from time to time to help maintain their loft.
In the last few years, these traditional futon fillings have been developed further, Through the expertise of John Cotton, the leading futon and mattress filling manufacturer, the cotton and woolen felt fibres are now combined in a thermally bonded pad with additional polyester to provide futon fillings with good loft, excellent bounce resilience, and above all a relatively light weight.
All our futons are filled with these latest technology fillings, giving the best of both worlds: that traditional futon comfort and feel without the heavy weight and need for daily rolling and turning, whilst retaining a good loft and soft-supportive surface to sit or sleep on.

Foam-Filled
Sofa Beds
As well as making our own futons, Sit and Sleep also makes alternatives such as the ZIPIT, ZIPZAP, KEWB and SLOUCH-COUCH Sofa beds. All of these sofa beds are filled with high-quality foam. sometimes supplemented by polyester fibres. All our foam fillings come with a 10-year guarantee, although to date we have never has a claim on this warranty.
Pocket-Sprung Sofa Beds
Most of our top of the range sofa beds from our Danish partner, INNOVATION LIVING, are filled at least in part with individual pocket-sprung fillings giving the ultimate in comfort and durability.
Futon Bases
Supplied 95% Assembled
- Not "Flat-Packed"
On a practical note - all our futon bases are fully assembled during manufacture, and then partially dismantled for packing and shipping. Therefore when you order a futon from us you will only need to do a small amount of re-assembly for your futon base to be ready for use.
This system does ensure your futon base will fit perfectly together. In all the many hundreds of futon bases made at Sit and Sleep, there hasn't been one base that wouldn't fit together.
You will not need to "start from scratch" to assemble your futon base - for example having to screw together all the slat components which is the case with many other timber bases available on the market.

Our Workshop
and Showroom
Set in an idyllic position with views of the rolling hills of Cambridgeshire just outside Cambridge, Sit and Sleep is proud to offer one of the widest ranges of UK-made futons and sofa beds available. From simple iconic products such as the Classic timber futon to the urban contemporary sophistication of the Innovation range of contemporary sofa beds, we can supply flexible sofa beds to suit most tastes at low prices and top quality. We make many of the products we sell in our own workshop, all to our own designs and offering something just a bit different.
We have a dedicated 1000 sq foot showroom with many models on display together with a 9000 sq foot workshop and warehouse. Most sofa beds are held in stock or in many instances we can make them the same day if needed,
Located just a few miles from Junction 9 of the M11 and without city-centre traffic and ample parking it's easier to visit us than you might think. Central London is only about a 90 minute car journey for example. Many visitors combine a trip to our showroom with a visit to the historic University city of Cambridge. Futons are our specialty and the partners of Sit and Sleep have literally made tens of thousands of futons over the last 20 years supplied to many of the leading names in retailing throughout the UK. Today we produce and sell products only for direct sale to the end user and do not supply wholesale.
With all our futons our prices are low and our quality high because we make and design them ourselves. When we select sofa beds from other suppliers, we try hard to keep the prices as low as possible, many of our outsourced sofa beds can be found elsewhere at much higher prices. |
