How to Store a Futon: Top Tips

4 min read | |

A futon mattress is a mattress built from different layers of fillings, including wool, woollen felt, polyester, and foam, depending on the specifications. Some futon mattresses also include a metal spring element. Our futon mattresses are crafted to offer a durable, easy-to-maintain alternative to traditional beds. In this guide, we’ll explore the actions you can take on how to store a futon.

How to store a futon mattress?

Futon mattresses are rolled or folded and generally stored on their ends. This means that when you first receive your futon mattress, you need to unpack it and lay it out flat. If it has been tightly rolled, you should reverse-roll it to encourage it to lie flat. To restore the loft after vertical storage or shipping, plump and shake the mattress to redistribute the filling.

If your mattress is going to be folded onto a futon frame to make a sofa, you may need to encourage the mattress to adopt the shape it needs by folding it, so the fillings will naturally allow the mattress to adopt the necessary shape.

It’s essential not to leave your futon mattress directly on the floor when not in use. This is due to the potential excess moisture it may soak up, which will lead to mould. Simply fold or roll it up and store it away.

Longer term storage

If you’re not planning to use your futon mattress for an extended period, it’s a good idea to pack the mattress away carefully to maintain its condition. Before doing so, ensure that the mattress is thoroughly aired out and completely dry to prevent any mould or mildew from forming. Next, roll the mattress along its width to form a cylindrical shape, like a sausage, as this helps minimise creasing and makes it easier to store.

Once rolled, you can secure it with straps or ties to keep it compact and prevent it from unrolling during storage. For optimal protection, especially if the mattress is being stored in a loft, shed, or garage, we recommend using an impermeable plastic bag or a vacuum-sealed storage bag to prevent moisture build-up and keep the mattress dry. If you’re using a plastic bag, make sure to seal it tightly and consider adding a few silica gel packets inside to absorb any residual moisture.

Cleaning before storage

Before storing your futon, you may want to ensure its mattress is thoroughly clean and ready to be stowed away. All our mattresses can be cleaned using spot dry cleaning materials or using a damp cloth with an upholstery cleaner. It’s important not to get the mattress wet if using water-based cleaning agents. In order to avoid water marks on drying the upholstery, any water-based cleaning should be tested in an inconspicuous area to ensure it does not leave marks before proceeding to clean a larger area.

We also offer a choice of different removable futon mattress covers which fit over the main mattress and can be removed for cleaning or dry cleaning, depending on the fabric chosen. You can order the removable covers with your futon, or at a later time if you want to update your decor.

Where to store a futon?

Store the mattress in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid placing heavy items on top of the mattress, as this can cause it to lose shape over time. Checking on the mattress periodically during storage can help you catch any signs of dampness or damage early, ensuring it remains in good condition for future use.

How to use your futon mattress

With our futon mattresses, you should not attempt to remove the outer fixed cover. The zip attached is for manufacturing purposes only. If you leave your mattress on the floor, this will lead to a build-up of condensed moisture under the futon, resulting in an increased risk of mildew. For optimal use, it’s best to use your mattress on a slatted, sturdy futon frame. Futon frames are available in a wide range of materials, including wood and steel. At Sit & Sleep, we offer an array of high-quality wooden futon frames for long-lasting durability!
